Crystal River, Florida

Florida has some 700 freshwater springs, 33 of which are categorized as the first magnitude, meaning they discharge at least 100 cubic feet of water per second. The Nature Coast boasts several of these high volume springs, the largest of which are the 30-odd springs that feed Kings Bay, near the town of Crystal River. Maintaining an average temperature of 72°F (22.5°C), the water attracts upwards of 800 manatees (and many more tourists) during the winter months between October and March. Were it not for the manatees, Crystal River, like Homosassa and Cedar Key, would be a low-key fishing community.
